Jisho Touch 1.1 has been submitted to the AppStore and is pending approval.
As I was mentioning in the last post about the entries in JMDict and how some of their formatting has irked me for a while. Irk me no more! I’ve fixed it and the best part is searching is improved. It also fixes entries where it has extra in the middle and such.
Moreover, extra whitespace and such is ignored when searching allowing one to be a bit less exact with input (which somtimes happens when you are walking around looking at your iPhone).
Also added is the ability to toggle displayed languages off and on. So if you don’t want to see Russian in every entry you can turn it off in the Preferences.
The database has been updated to the latest available as well, gaining a few entries and refinements I’m sure.
I’ve also added Japanese and German Localization! This should hopefully make the user experience that much better for that many more people. A huge thanks goes out to Sascha Holesch for making the German localization possible.
One thing that has irked me about the JMDict file is the tendency to include descriptors along with a word without actually including just the word without descriptors as well.
For example, one of the entries, say for 水. It’s a very basic and very important word (water). However, the entry for 水 presently is translated as “water (cold, fresh)”. This creates problems – problems that if you do an exact search you won’t get any results if you search for just “water”.
I’ve had enough with it and fixed it once and for all. In the next releases of Jisho and Jisho Touch (both hopefully next week or so) this will no longer be a problem. You can search for “water” and get a bunch of results. I think this will really improve Jisho and Jisho Touch quite a bit and I can’t wait to get it into your hands.
Jisho Touch was just posted in the app store!

Exciting times!
Jisho Touch 1.0 is complete and has been submitted to the AppStore. I am really excited about Jisho Touch. I’ve been using it a lot recently on my iPhone and I wonder how I lived without it before (similar thoughts about my iPhone in general).
I am in the process of back-porting improvements in Jisho Touch to Jisho and hope that a new and improved Jisho can be released “real soon now”™
I will sending out an email when Jisho Touch is approved in the AppStore. If want to know the moment it’s released, sign up to receive our newsletter on the right.
